Synthetic Lubricants vs. Mineral Based Lubricants

Mineral based lubricants are derived through a distillation process (i.e. refining).  Synthetic lubricants are made through a reaction process.  The reaction process significantly improves the consistency of the stock.  The refining process that is used for conventional lubricants do not remove all the contaminates and undesirable molecules such as waxes.  Whereas, synthetic lubricants are pure and have molecules that are uniform is  size.  The properties of mineral oils vary due to variations in the crude from which they are derived.  On the other hand, synthetics are very predictable when evaluating their properties and performance.
